All dressed up in their Sunday best and enjoying the celebrations!
This wonderful photograph was taken on 22nd June 1911 to show some of the residents of Deeping outside the Bull Hotel in the Market Place on the occasion of the Coronation of King George V.
The centre of attraction seems to be “Old Robie”, the new steam engine owned by Mr Gibbons of Langtoft. To the delight of the children, he hitched some farm wagons behind it so that they could go for rides. The children were presented with medals in the morning, treated to a tea party and races afterwards, followed by fireworks at 10.30 in the evening. A day to remember for many years!
Can you recognize anyone in the picture?
Eric Bowman was eight years old at the time. His memories were published in “Memories of Market Deeping” in 1990 (Deepings Heritage : currently reprinting). He lived in the Market Place for most of his life and was at the heart of village life.
We have a number of photographs and postcards showing what what life was like in the Deepings in the past and they will begin to appear in this gallery. The current pictures are from the early 1900s.
Of course we always welcome any new pictures to add to the collection! Or any memories or information too!
